Since you like the BRS rock (as do I, I think) are you going to use 100% dry rock and try to move frags or easy to move pieces from your existing tank to the new one. Are you going to have an intermediary tank to get through the process of cycling? (My new tank will be where my old tank was) Or do you have the luxury of a new location so you can slowly move things over?

For me, this whole change out is getting a little freaky. It may be worth chatting on the phone. Lol. Ya never know!!!!

hey chas. i think i ahve a gameplan for when i switch the tanks over.im gonna have to pull the 75 out about a foot. then set the new cabinet 6" off the wall . then the new tank will fit behind the 75. at that point, in the new tank goes live sand bed of 4". then the new rock will be added. once i like the way the bottom rock is, ill add about a foot of new water to the new tank and and tie both tanks into the new sump. that way i can deal with the same water chemistry between the tanks. the new rock will get some algae but i dont think ill really deal with a cycle this way. ill have plenty of water made up to deal with both tanks for a week and then ill start switching over everything from the 75 including the existing rock. everything gets moved except the maroon and the gsp on the wall. then my 75 will slide underneath and be topped off to become the fuge. i already made an insert from acrylic to slide in and seperate a small prtion on each side of the tank for and iinlet with a baffle and a pump compartment on the other end. it should go pretty smoothly...i hope...lol... i think the key to it all will be having enough water on hand to handle what comes with the dry rock. if things get out of control, i can always throw everything in my buds frag tank till i figure out whats up.

Am I reading this right that your old DT will become your new sump? Lucky you if that"s the case. In some respects. Still a big job.

Not that I have any experience, but I think having enough premade saltwater will be key if things turn south. When I finally get one, ill be replacing just the tank on my system and adding a fuge. Half of my tank has a shallow sand bed and about a quarter has a bed of over 4 inches. The rest is somewhere in between. I plan on housing the rock, corals, and fish in a one or two seperate containers for the few (hopefully) hours it takes to make the swap. My biggest concerns are drilling the holes in the stand in good time and disturbing the sand bed. Having a lot of water may be just enough to prevent disaster.

it is gonna be the fuge when i replace it. i made an insert that is pretty much just to separate it on the inlet and return sides. at the moment, i have a 45 fuge with a 6" sand bed. the overflow just falls down on top of the chaeto and i have a piece of glass seperating a spot with just enough room to hold 2 quiet one pumps. 1 that supplies the skimmer and the return from that falls down on the chaeto right next to the overflow pipe. the other goes back to the dt. its real simple and jerry rigged...lol...but it works....the chaeto grows well and the fuge is loaded with pods. i also have some mangroves in it that are pretty cool and growing well. ........lol............i cant wait to exile the roon to the fuge. he should be real happy down there. he'll still have his wall of gsp, and ill put his hairy mushroom rock down there for him. it will give him 3' of tank all to himself. im so tired of him breaking off pieces of stylo when he gets mad or picking up big frags off my ppe's and hiding them in the back. usually a couple days later, the engineer goby pushes them back out front next to the brain and then the roon stashes them in the back again. its kinda comical and funny thing is, the ppe's are doing really good and dont seem stressed at all. i just havent been quick enough to grab the frag before the roon gets it. i cant get rid of the roon because in a way, he is a really cool fish and we've had him since the beginning. i just cant deal with him in the dt anymore. hes also chased 5 chromis, 1 scooter, carpenter wrasse, beautiful male anthias, rainford goby into the nem.

Nice! I love the look of certain macro algaes in a DT. That's halimeda right? That's not one of those weedy take over your tank macros like caulerpa, correct?

yep, hali it is....i cant say it doesnt take over things though. when i got that rock it wall covered in the pink zoas and it was just a little piece of it. i dont mind it though. the two tangs and lawnmower love munching on it. i fragged the pinks just in case it wipes them out completely so it can stay. macro does look nice in dt

lol...i forgot about that. a little update on her tank. for over a year my stepmonster has been bugging about a nano and we decided to put the tank over at my dads and put a nicer tank in her room.
but here is the good news to go with that. instead of doing a 120 wide, i am going to be picking up a 180 by the end of the upcoming week! im getting the same depth and height as the 120 only gaining 2 more feet. yeah, the boss lady finally caved ive been trying to put a monster in my living room for 2 years now and she finally gave me the wall that i needed to do it on. new build thread coming real soon!!!!
