This video was created by the local Mactan Aquarium and is shown to all visiting school children and is also distributed throughout the local school system as well. Quite shocking at first but there is a bright side and I'm thrilled to see such educational material being produced localy.

Below is a link showing how Linda and I use our home aquarium to teach our local school children about the life that lives literaly in their backyards. I'm always amazed how unaware the local population is of their reefs.

Thanks for sharing that! Do you guys have classes over often? It looks like they really enjoyed it.

Not very often, we get about 4 classes per school year, which pretty much covers all of the kids as the local school is very small and doesn't have a great many students. I really enjoy it though because once you begin to explain things, the kids get really interested and ask a lot of questions, the first is usualy wondering where I got all the life that is in the aquarium as they simply have no idea what lies just a bit further out from where they go swimming each weekend. Those that have seen corals in the shallows just assume they are "rocks", but after an hour or so of listening and learning its a joy to see how concerned they get.

Children are naturally curious, open-minded and receptive to knowledge. They are especially interested in learning about the natural environment and there is no better way of teaching than active participation.

Seeing corals and reef fishes in an aquarium will make a much bigger impression on them than reading about them in a book. Now they'll all want to take scuba lessons.
