Question Why is the greenish coraline algae growing faster than my purple/pink

I have some greenish coraline algae spreading faster than the pinks and purples. It is not unsightly I just prefer the more vivid colors. I am using the coralife lunar deluxe 72" fixture with 2 daylight and 2 actinic blue lamps. The lights are on an average of 13 hours / day. I use Purple Up and essential elements. My water parameters are good. Is there anything I can do to promote the purple and pinks to grow faster? On a 125 gallon, I use a coralife 220 skimmer, koralia (the big one) and a fluval FX5.

I've moved your post out of the Fish Aquarium Forum into the Reef Forum where it may get more attention.

In general, the water quality must be balanced in alkalinity, magnesium, and calcium as if you wanted a reef tank. These 'algae' are taking up these nutrients. In this post, you'll find the measurements of each of these and their balanced numbers: What is Water Quality Control these and the Coraline should do well in regular lighting.

from what i have noticed about the coralline algae in my tank, it is the spectrum and intensity of the light that affects what algaes grow. if i use a 10k, intense light, my greens grow like crazy. if i use a 20k(purplish/blue), dimmer light, the purples and reds flourish. hope that helps.

just wanted to add...the areas of rock that receive direct light, usually have green coralline algae, the shaded areas are usually purpleish.

Re: Why is the greenish coraline algae growing faster than my purple/pink

im having the same problem in my 30 gallon reeftank i bought lr covered in purple and pinks, but all thats growin on the glass is mostly green, ive been looking online for a while and asking around, and no one really knows why the green grows more in certain situations . all ive been able to get for the best advice is keep alk mag and calcium, where they need to be and be patient. the only other thing that could be affecting the color of the coraline is the different types of lighting, so im actually gonna get a new lighting setup and see what happens, but i helped a friend setup a 30 gallon with the same light as me and his tank is covered in purple, wich doesent make sense because he never does any maitenece, the waters always low so the salts always high, never water changes, and when he does use freshwater to top it off its straight out of the tap!!! go figure, the only thing i can leartn from that is sometimes you gotta let nature run its course!! good luck!!
