    Water mix/storage

    Hey guys and gals,

Just wondering how everyone upped the salt in their tanks? gallon at a time?

Also wondering do you have to keep water movement in your water storage, or will the water be fine for how ever long?

    Re: Water mix/storage

I'm in the process of raising my salinity from 1.024 to 1.025.I have a sump, when it lowers due to evaporation I put in two cups of water from the last water change every few days and then test with a refractrometer.I save 5gal.of water each time for different reasons. You can also just take out and replace two cups if you don't have a sump. The saved water is also good for replacing lost water from the skimmer,if you always replaced lost skimmer water with freshwater your salinity would lower.

That makes a good point saving a little of the old water, since you don't have to make new just to make adjustments. But still wondering how long ro and ro/salt mix water can be stored?

I wouldn't keep it for more than two weeks, but it all depends on the temp and what is in it and what gets in it...along with light, circulation and other things. Something will end up growing in it, and that something may or may not be good.

If you keep it in a container like I do with a screw on air tight seal,it will easily be quite fine until the next water change.

thanks guys I keep my new salt/water mix in a 30 gallon rubber trash can with a powerhead for circulation, and it's in the basement so it stays around 65 degrees. I have a ton of the salt buckets but the lids always disappear Thanks again guys

    Re: Water mix/storage

I keep my ro/di salt mix in an airtight/screwcap culligan container. Its stored in the garage in the winter for about a week or two and seems to keep just fine. in the summer I keep it in the extra fridge in the garage. Warm areas and exposure to light will definitely shorten the shelf life. To up the salt in the tank, I would just add a little extra "Instant Ocean" mix in with my water change.
