refugiums

hello again,
thanks for the good advice regarding plenums. I have decided to continue to try to find examples of plenums locally and weigh the results. I recently read some disturbing news in FAMA about plenums so I am still skeptical. I may decide to use the concept of live substate in the main tank with a large refugium. Any suggestions on the best type of substate? Any one with knowledge and first hand expirience with this concept please reply.

I think you should go here and ask Dr. Ron Shimek about plenums.

(This may or may not be on topic, but...)

Here is why I would avoid a plenum...At work (LFS) we have a 70g reef with a plenum...ALL IT DOES IS GROW CALURPA!!!! It grows so fast in there it is crazy, we even have two yelow tangs in there (i know, i know ) and it grows faster than they can eat it.

My hypothisys: After 10 yrs or so of operation the plenum has worked but now it is just realeasing everything it has "gathered" BACK into the tank

Although it works good for our purposes, exp. After calurpa has covered EVERY SQUARE inch of rock we put it into our 125 then order 6 "wafer thin" yellow tangs and they get fat! It is great for that purpose but otherwise I would not suggest it because of everything it is leaching...HTH
