That's a start in the right direction.Have you ever changed the membrane or pulled maintenance on it.

Ok, after looking at the test results, and guessing at the accuracy of the dip strips, and looking at the picture again, I gotta lean towards some type of slime algea or cyn.(not all cyn.is red) bacteria, if you enlarge the pic, you can see oxygen bubbles in the slime, I would prepare up some saltwater and clean the he#$ out of the crushed coral bed or as much of it as can be gotten and do a water change at the same time,

Steve, I don't believe it to be diatoms as I've never seen them stringy like like, thats why I said some type of slime algea growing out of the cc bed.
    Tanks,

Could be,in post #19 I said I have diatoms but not that slimy. It would be a good idea to get rid of the CC or there will be more trouble down the road.

diatoms are usually a brown powdery like substance, not goo from hel%, Like I mentioned, cyano of some sort, I'll bet on it

The reason I think it is Dinoflagellates is that volume one of "The Reef Aquarium" by Delbeek and Sprung (page 326/327) describes it as - "This material has the consistency of nasal mucus and it can be dark brown, light tan or nearly colorless. It usually develops as a light coating but soon entraps air and forms long strings that float up in the water"... kind sounds exactly like what I have...

Wow, you have quite a tonge there, does it change colour, depending on the test you do to the water , like those test sticks?
