Thinking in setting up a 35 gallon reef tank.

So, im thinking of converting my 35 gallon freshwater, wich is basicly dead now, into a coulorfull Reef tank.

Here is the equipment that came with the tank:
1x Waterhome Aquarium Canopy (Wich covers all top of the tank)
    1x Aqua-glo T-8 fluoresent lamp 20w
    1x Sun-glo T-8 fluoresent 20w lamp.
1x Fluval plus 4 internal Filter
    1x 100w Heater

If i do decide to convert it, i will buy one Protein Skimmer, power heads, and new lights that are subtitle for reef tanks, about 13kg of live rock and enought sand to make a good sand bed.

    Good luck with that!

Oh, and make sure that you never treated your tank with any meds that included copper in them. It is very difficult to clean up tanks that were previously treated with copper, resulting in many unnecessary deaths of inverts (snails and such). I'm sure you know that but it is good at times to be reminded about the most abvious things. ;)
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

Oh, thank you for that, i indeed have treated my tank once with copper based medicine (i think, i need to check it first, but as it was ich, i suspect copper), i will make sure to to clean it well.

    Good idea zhenya:

    Marine System Clean Up Recommendations

Has specific instructions for tanks that used copper.

Save yourself the trouble,I had a 30g and upgraded to a 50g which is all I had room for.You will want to upgrade too.Save your money and do it right, get at least a 50g I say 50g because IMO a 50g is better than a 55g because it's wider 50g=36"x18" vs 55g=48"x12" which gives you the ability to have a 6 or 8 bulb fixture instead of only 4 bulbs.Anyway get a tank, sump, light fixture and a very good skimmer and you will be set. There's no sense in making the mistakes I did,if you need more help contact me by going to my build thread or pm me.

I would if everything in here wasn't so damn expensive, for example, here live rock, wich most don't even have coralline are 25 euro a kg. thats about thirty and somthing dollars for 2 pounds, you can imagine how much a 50 gallon would cost

I don't know if this idea is exceptable but if you can't order LR from the internet, then buy some cheap Fiji base rock send it to me and I'll ship it to you bulk shipping with FedEx or UPS.It wouldn't matter how long it took to get there because you should cure it and it will grow coralline algae in time anyway. But you would have to see how much it would be to ship it from me to you (if it would be worth it) and would it be legal to ship you the rock.

If you do buy rock from a lfs don't buy live rock w/ a lot of coraline on it cause it looks cool. The coraline degrades the biofiltration performance of the rock. It fills in all the nook n crannies that bacteria grow on and limits the rock ability to house good bacteria. I read a good article about it, I will post if I can find. I look at my tank and more than half my rock is covered purple and I am regreting buying purple rock when I started cause it spreads like crazy. A lot of rock in fish stores comes from people who took down their tank. I am going to web route next tank I start if my local guy dosent have a nice batch. JMHO

It doesn't matter what rock you get it's going to grow coralline algae whether you want it or not.Yes the coralline algae will cut off some circulation we talked about that in the thread entitled "Coralline Algae".

There's nothing wrong with having coralline algae, some people go to extreme measures to acquire it.If cost is a big factor then take it slowly.
