JMHO, but most of the reefkeepers I know, do not cover their tanks, and if the do, most use eggcrate to keep jumpers in, using glass tops will cut down on the oxygen exchange at the surface level, additionally unless you clean them just about daily, it will cut down on the amount of light your creatures receive. as I said, JMHO

Egg crate is a white plastic sheet, that is a grid, it's also called a light diffuser, home depot, lowes, and large home improvement store sells them, they come in 2 x 4 foot sheets and run about 10 - 14 bucks. Very easy to cut to size with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver.

EggCrate would be good. I just added some over my tank to stop jumpers as well as added an 8x8 piece of glass over my overflow area only to stop water from splashing into my lights. Instead of hanging a foot about my tank, my lights are now directly on the top of the tank, only about 2inches from the water, itll be a good route for you to go with.
Well this was the outcome of the whole eggcrate option. Go to the local home depot purchase some cut to fit and place it on my tank.Turn on my leds before my main lights kick off to c if that would help. Lights go out and man shear panic again from my fish. This time he kept jumping into the eggcrate and banging himself up. Made the call lights r just not gonna work! If I would of left them on guarantee he would of been dead this morning.![]()
Kudos for the awareness, and taking action to protect your fish. That egg crate can be left in place, or saved for the future. It's generally useful stuff to have around.
Personally I would leave the egg crate in place, at least for the next few weeks or months. Whether or not you keep the LED's.
Is there a chance the LED's are simply showing you what occurs every single night that you turn off the lights? Only now that you have the LED's, you can actually see your fish freaking out due to the sudden change in lighting?
I happened to be near my own tank a few weeks ago when the lights went out, all at once, but I could still see in the tank because of light from the other room. What I saw was a sleeper goby that shot from one side of the tank to the other, and then from the sand to the top of the tank, all in about 1 second.
That's when I decided to add a second timer, so that my lights do not all go out at the same time. My actinic lighting stays on 20 minutes longer now. And I believe it has helped.
I agree that you should leave the eggcrate in place if you have a fish that likes to jump. Otherwise, you will wake up one morning and the fish will be gone anyway, with our without LED lighting. I do find it strange that it would be the lunar lights that make the fish go wacko. Regardless, the lunar lights are mainly for your viewing pleasure and not the fishes so I say, get rid of them.
+1 Cynthia,
Lunar lights are for us, not the fish, most of us live in area's that offer enough ambient light to keep our fishies and corals happy at night, most of us leave alittle light on somewhere in the house anyway, so that we don't step on a cat or the dogs tail, you get the drift, good call on getting rid of them. and I agree with everyone else, keep the eggcrate on there for the time being. Just incase it's not the lights that are spooking this fish
