    LED Panic

O.K reefers here goes last night finally got to use my new lunar led fix for the first time. When my lights kicked off and it kicked on one of my fishes went into serious panic mode. Is this typical? Should I continue to use it? If so will he get use to it? Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Sudden changes are usually bad, including lighting.

Can you increase the distance of the lighting from the tank, and shorten the distance over a period of time?

Are there areas in the tank where the fish can escape the bright lighting? Make sure he has plenty of options to avoid the lighting, or he will continue to be stressed.

Todd, thanks for the feedback. Moving the light futher from my tank unfortunately will not b an option. I have it mounted to my pc fix that will not set any higher from the water? However he does have several hidding places that he can go to. My main thing is that my tank is topless and he wants to try and jump out?

If you think he might jump out, assume that he will. If you've ever experienced a fish "suicide", you know that is is one of the more regrettable, and avoidable incidents.

Your tank's inhabitants are counting on you.

I wouldn't turn the lights back on until you are able to provide larger shadowed areas for your fish to roam (not just hide).

Can you angle the LED's to change the intensity in the tank?

Can you partially obscure your lighting with some sort of barrier above the tank? One that won't be a fire hazard?

What also seems to be weird if you will. Is that the light does not seem to bother any of my other fish? I guess im gonna try and maybe angle it some way or another. Definately a bummer if Im not able to use this fixture cause man it sure does look cool.

I'm assuming this lunar led fixture is for nighttime viewing and is not actually bright.I'm not a fan of this new lighting craze, all animals need sleep.Even though these lights are not actually bright they are (I bet) brighter than actual moonlight especially in water and at depth.IMO this is just a gimmick to sell a product.

I haven't asked about the kind of fish in your tank, but some of them may live in darker environments in the wild. We should always try to recreate as much as we can the same settings these creatures are used to prior to capture. We owe them that.

And some fish are just more sensitive than others, regardless of species.

That said, most of the fish we keep are adaptable, if changes are introduced slowly, over hours, days, or weeks.

    Is it lunar lighting?!?

    What company/model?

I had been considering those for my tank as well, but maybe I won't be getting them now. I was hoping to reduce stress by using them, to prevent the sudden lights-out effect when my lights shut off at night.

Some have add-on controllers that vary the intensity. Maybe those controllers shouldn't be optional.

Funny you mentioned the sudden lights out effect! My fish seem to not be bothered by that at all?

Same here, all my lights come on and turn off at the same time.I have a Tek light with the option of using two bulbs separately and a digital timer with multiple sequences but I don't use any of it.

The reviews here show that some have had the too-bright and panic experience as well. One guy unplugged one module, and another guy taped paper over the light module to dim it (fire hazard?).

If I opt for any moonlighting, I might go this route:

    R2 Moonlight Controller

I know that some people have used screen, like that on a window screen, to shade corals when first introducing them to a tank or changing lighting to reduce shock. You could also try egg crate to reduce the risk of your fish jumping out of the tank. I certainly wouldn't tape anything over the light. Yes, fire hazard!
