No problem either way. Lights aren't going to noticeably affect your cycle either way.
I am 2 weeks into my new setup and cycle ( no more ammonia and nitrites high) It's a 55 gallon, 40 pounds of live sand and so far about 40 pounds of cured live rock. I was able to give my green chromis to a friend with a well established tank (thank god for the fish sake). My question is with just the live Rock and sand how long if at all should my lights be on. I was told that it would probably do more harm than good to have the lights on at all during this process. I am currently running the lights about 8-10 hours a day.

You don't need to run your lights 10 hours a day at this point, however about 4 hours should be good enough for any photosynthetic critters that may survive cycling period.
Kind regards,

Normally I would say if your cycling (or just after) you don't need the lights on,it would promote unnecessary algae growth.I didn't have my lights on for over a full month. But after reading zhenya's statement which I agree with,I would do what he suggests.
