I just got off the phone with Jeff from Jeff's exotic fish and as I mentioned on an earlier post, my Vanisi lr had turned from colorful to chalky white. He said virtually all living things on the lr had died WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!
I've learned my lesson on buying uncured. Yes I had a skimmer, yes I had the tank at 76 degrees, yes I have a ph in the tank. ------------------ A Fool and his Money are Soon Parted |

Medman,
Might be a long shot but is it possible that it is silt from the sand bed? If you utilize a fine - silt particle size and stir it up, your rock will surely look white. Another observation insists that you check out some articles regarding temperatures. Here is some good discussion: http://www.reefs.org/library/article...mperature.html Scott |

I wish it was fine silt, but unfortunately all there was, was the glass bottom the the all-glass holding tank

Medman,
Don't sweat it, it will be just fine. As I have said in the past, there's not much life on Vanisi rock. Heres a pic of the right side of my tank. Notice the white piece of Vanisi that I transfered from my curing tank to main tank yesterday, Its in the back mixed in with 2 year old Fiji and 3 month old Vanisi. The 3 month old Vanisi had the same white look 3 months ago. |

See there, all is not lost. Buck up little camper...
If it really is dead, however, you might ask they guy you got it from how long it was in transit, much over 72 hours and it dies anyway....but even then it will eventually come back. ------------------ JCS "Take one and pass it back, just like your IQ's were normal." -Professor Hathaway in the movie"Real Genius" |

thanks for the support I'll keep curing Would you recommend that I take a tooth brush and scrub at the lr(to remove the chalk) when I get ready to put it into my reef?

Medman,
I would clean off the dead material, but I don't think the white chalk is going to come off so easy. That sounds like the coraline is bleached. Unless something really bad happened during shipment, I think you're going to find out that more life survived than you realize. My LFS sold me some figi that literally froze during shipment--he sold it as base rock. The stuff was almost pure white when I bought it. It's only been in my tank for a couple of weeks, but I've got coraline and macro algae growing nicely on it. ------------------ -Todd 'Only the corrupted can recognize true innocence for what it is.' |

Sker,
Don't worry Jeff said you can just microwave the lr for a "quick cure" ------------------ A Fool and his Money are Soon Parted |
