Question 180 gallon fish stocking list.

    The tanks a 72 x 24 x 24 180 gallon with a 75g or 90g sump/refugium.

I'm looking for advice on which fish I should cut from the list and also cool fish that I could add.

    Tangs:

    Blue tang

    Powder Blue Tang

    Sailfin Tang

    Dwarf Angels:

    Flame Angelfish

    Bellus Angelfish

    Basslets:

    Chalk Basslet

    Marine Beta

    Blennies:

    Scooter Blenny

    Banggai Cardinalfish - 8

    Black Ocellaris Clownfish - pair

    Green Chromis - 8

    blue Chromis - 4

    Firefish - 2

    Green Mandarin Dragonet - pair

    Spotted Dragonet

    Gobies:
    Green Clown Goby

    Orange Stripe Prawn Goby

    Flaming Prawn Goby

    Falco Hawkfish

    Blue Spot Jawfish

    Foxface Rabbitfish

    Wrasses:

    McCosker's Flasher Wrasse

    Christmas Wrasse

Niger Triggerfish(love the fish, but not sure if it will go well with the tank.)

    Flashlight Fish - 3

Re: 180 gallon fish stocking list.

I Would def. recommend not to mix 2 different pairs of clownfish, but in that size tank it might just work.
I would also recommend not to put in mandarins untill the tank has been runing for at least 6 months, and Mandarins need tons of live rock, or they'll starve to death.
The trigger doesn't look very reef safe, make sure to research those fish's.

Edit: I now know that the trigger fish is not a good idea, they are not reef safe.

Would you live in a moderate size house with no bathroom? if not, then do what is right! Let your tank cycle for one month. Respect the fish! ;)

I would nix the angels and the trigger if you're planning on keeping corals. It's always a crap shoot when you add angels to a reef, some do fine others cause major problems, not woth the risk imo. Also, pick one wrasse, maybe two, they will compete with the mandarins for food so I would not recommend mixing them. Also hold off on the blennies until you have a healthy algae population. Not sure about the beta either, you'll want to research there. Also know that the chromis' will require an auto-feeder unless your there every day to feed them 3 to 4 times. One more thing... there's a two-tang limit for a six foot tank, the foxface will get fairly large as well. Good luck!!!

Mainly FOWLR, but with a few soft corals.

If you will have any coral, then its not FOWLR anymore, its a Reef, as FOWLR stands for Fish only with live rock.

Re: 180 gallon fish stocking list.

check this out on the marine betta Marine Betta

awesome looking fish. My LFS carries them on occasion and they look incredible. largely predatory though.

and the falco hawks love to eat invertebrates be it crabs, snails, shrimp. My dad just took his out of his tank. it ripped into new hermits as soon as they hit the sand. also was eating nassarius snails of decent size.

i guess if your putting a trigger into the tank the hawk fish wont make even the slightest difference though. Triggers eat everything clean up crew.

the flame and coral beauty angel from all i have heard are reef safe with caution but it doesnt sound to me like you will be adding much coral.

check out the desjardinni (spelling) sailfin tang. amazing looking fish. could be a dominant display feature in a tank that size.

post pictures when your up and running.

    This is what McKay believes.

    1. Unless a tank is big enough it is not recommended to mix clowns.

    2. You need plenty of LR for pods, most mandarins only eat pods.

    3. Triggers and puffers are not reef safe, reef safe meaning all items usually found in a reef tank.

Although the marine beta is a predator, I don't think he will get big enough to eat any of the tank mates on the list.

Re: 180 gallon fish stocking list.

Smart to ask first and not plop em all in there and see what happens Also, lots of awesome selections. Here's my take on the tangs-- choose one. The Achilles have a terrible record of survival in captivity. The Powder Blue and Des Jardinis are my favorites. The Powder Blue is more prone to ich and more dominating- the Des Jardini has a reputation as being one of the less aggressive tangs. They all grow fast.
You heard about the angels- every one I've ever had eventually nipped at corals and clams (Flame, Coral Beauty, Bi-color).
Never kept a basselet but I love the Marine Beta. They're really shy and hide most of the time based on the ones I've seen in friends tanks.
Of the other fish choices- jawfish and flasher wrasses will jump- you've been warned
Blennies and Gobies are the coolest fish in the ocean! Latest video of my tank.

Go ahead and put em all and see what happens, i mean, you don't need to listen to others acording to you, so why hunt every post trying to get revenge? you don't need to listen ( even tought forums are for that ) and i don't feel like replying to all your raging posts because you think you dont need help. Im only here to help other's , you might not want advice , but other's want, not everyone likes to see fish suffering. Please don't start a fight, this thread doesn't need to suffer at your own selfish costs. He wants advice.

Seriously why would you just put them in and see what happens. If the details about a fish state it is not reef friendly, than why take the chance of getting expensive corals destroyed?

I see you were giving sound advice in the beginning and now you are going back to being against giving advice.

I remembered I had a puffer in my ****ty 55 gallon 8 years ago that was a horrible salt water setup. Anyway I decided to get some feather dusters and the next day they were all gone because the puffer ate them all. If you read the details on a puffer it states they are not reef friendly. I wouldnt put one in my 180 gallon setup now because I know they will eat things I dont want them to.

So your original advice was cool, but now saying put them all in and see what happens can end up in disaster if he wants a reef tank.

P.S. How is your tank coming, I remembered you with your forum battles on your thread. Pretty funny

I apologize, and you are right, I need to read these better.

Thanks for pointing that out Steve, I can always count on you to point out my mistakes.

It's not that I hope, just trying to make sure nobody make a mistake if we all look out for each other hopefully we won't make to many. And I wanted to clarify the problem that some of us have about sfreefer without exterraneous comments which might ruin a post.

Re: 180 gallon fish stocking list.

That Falco Hawkfish will eat all the gobys...on at the LFS has been their for almost a year in its own tank because he likes ANY fish that comes in his tank....not a good idea for a reef tank
