elegance coral placement

Tomorrow my order of a 2.5-3in pink tipped elegance coral is arriving!
I have spent a lot of time reading all about this coral however im currently stuck as to where I should place it in my tank. I know as of recently these corals are becoming more and more difficult to care for. The particular one I ordered from (bluezooaquatics) is from Indonesia and from what I researched online it says to place it in the substrate on the bottom with some partial shade.. But at my local LFS theyre telling me to place it on the top with direct lighting which is making me second guess myself. Help!

elegance corals can be abit of a pain to keep. i would say go with ur own research i have always seen them on the sustrate not sure bout the partial shade tho and they like flow. u will know when u get it in the right place it will double in size

Your LFS is clueless. This is a lagoonal species that is found only on the sand bed. Just look at the shape of the bottom of the skeleton when you get it and you will see that it is designed for burying itself in soft substrate. The bottom is V-shaped to help anchor it in the sand.

This coral is probably in the same category with some of the Goniopora species (another lagoonal coral) when it comes to being difficult to keep in captivity. I think the problem is that they aren't used to a clean, pristine environment. They're used to muddy waters. We know what their natural habitat is like but we don't really know what their nutritional requirements are, just as we don't know the nutritional requirements for Goniopora or Alveopora.

thank you guys for the responses! I will definitely place it in the bottom tomorrow. And I was thinking partial shade because its being picked now in deeper waters and its more sensitive to intense lighting (or atleast thats what ive been reading..) I have a perfect place to put it in the bottom. I had a feeling that the guy at my LFS wasnt right.

as for nutrition I was going to feed it (via turkey baster) baby brine, silversides, mysis, squid, mussels..about 2 or three times a week. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

yeah that sound spot on to me. only thing i will say is when u do feed it put a bit of food over the other side of the tank this will keep cleaner shrimps and fish away from it so they don't nick its food.
