I have never seen it used the way you're using it. You are implying that you sold the item previously at the striked out price. It you want customers to compare your price with what you think is the current selling price used by your competition, then you have to say "compare at $..." or something similar.
Check out how Live Aquaria does it and they're the largest online vendor in the U.S. If they want to show a sale price for an item, they say:
Was: $229.99Live Aquaria does not compare their prices with what they think the competition charges for similar stuff. Just remember that your practice of showing
Now: $199.99$750.00$59.99 is scaring people away from your website because they think your entire website looks scary and it does not impress them as a place they would want to do business.
Dr. Mac shows a few inverts on this page with a red striked through price and the new sale price in green beneath that price. However, those red striked through prices are the actual prices that Dr. Mac sold those items for previously. And those prices are all believable. Your stiked out prices are, plain and simple, NOT believable. All you are doing by showing that for virtually everything you sell is scaring people away.
