New to Reef Aquariums - Question about Cleaning a Tank

Hi! I am new to the Reef Aquarium hobby. I have visited quite a few aquarium stores, and spoken with the employees there. I have also checked out some videos from the library about how to set up a tank and things to think about. I have read a few books, and think I am ready to get started. I got a 75 gallon tank on Craigslist this week, and it came with quite a few supplies (lights, powerheads, sump, etc). I want to clean all of these things before starting my own tank, but I am not sure what to use to clean them. I searched online and found that you could use bleach, but I am afraid that will hurt the fish when I set it up. I also read that I could use a paste of water and baking powder. Does anyone know what I can use to get all the old algea, dirt and alkaline off the tank and equipment before I start to set up my own?

Thanks so much for your help!

Welcome to reefland! Try this sticky from Leebca. He's the guru when it comes to set up questions.

Also you read all of the stickies in the three forums that apply to your needs. A ton of good info there.
    Good luck and happy reading!

    Hello,
Distilled white vinegar (acetic acid) works quite well and is harmless. It will clean much better than bleach.

I usually scrub the tank with salt and paper towels. the salt seems to be abrasive enough to get the crud off but not scratch the glass.
