    frag identification

Just hoping someone might be able to help with an I.D. on these frags:

    1. This one has a bluish hue to it. Also, it lies flat on the rock (not "puffy")

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5. These next 2 pics are not coral frags that I obtained, it just appeared on my live rock out of nowhere apparently. When i go to touch it, it quickly shrinks into it's tubes. Not sure if these are harmful to other corals.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Re: frag identification

Here's a video (rough, quick vid) of the brown, tubular, aptasia-looking thing in my tank. There is actually 2 bunches in my tank and I caught one open and one closed. I had to add the music, because my wife kept talking while i was filming. Didn't wanna air our one-sided conversation on the forums.

Hopefully this helps in identifying these "things". I wannt to know if they should be removed...

    thanks.

    Hey Joe,

In the pictures number 5 and 6 I see some hydroids, not Aiptasia. Although you do have Aiptasias as well, but in those images I see a colony of the hydroids, potentially little worse than Aiptasia as they too can overrun everything. And they are very hard to kill. DO some searches using keyword hydroids since we discussed them here many times.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

Thanks for the reply. Hydroids huh? That gives me a lot to go off of, I'll get to researching asap. I had pretty much came to a stop in my search, looking mostly for a diff type of aptasia. And those aptasia you mentioned, Im very much aware of those buggers, unfortunately. Maybe if my husbandry was a little more strict, I wouldn't have these worries. I'm just trying to decide which way to go with those: copperband butterfly, pepp. Shrimp, or kalk paste method. Thanks again.

    Re: frag identification

I haven't had first hand experience with exterminating apastia yet but I did some research to be prepared when the time comes ( and I'm sure it will). I've heard mixed results with pep shrimps. Kalk paste definitely works but is a time consuming method. I've also read berghia nudibranchs do the job quite well but starve after the population of apastia has been depleted.
When it happens, I plan on using kalk paste as a first choice. Hope this helps some.

    Re: frag identification

    Thanks James,

I'm accepting all and any input at all times, anywhere, and anyhow.
But I was also thinking of use kalk as my first option. If it gets too time consuming or the aptasia starts spreading too quickly, i'll prolly pick-up a butterfly fish. Hopefully the kalk works for me b/c adding a fish to the aquarium is very involved and nerve racking at times.

    ciao
