    Question 2 dead fish :(

So I came home today to 2 dead fish... What the heck is going on here.
Last night I did a 20% water change. Everything was perfect. I put new bulbs in (T5) and a brand new circulation pump. 2 things I think it may be: I have a marine land canister filter and put in its water purifying filter which is not charcoal and basically like a hot tub filter and when I did my water change I added in a purifying chemical to get rid of the chlorine(tetra- aqua safe water neutralizer/conditioner). like normal... but left the charcoal filter out over night. Would that cause this problem!!??
sailfin Tang and chromis are the ones that are gone
yet my other chromis and clown along with snails, star, shrimp and corals are fine.
Maybe it was the new pump? although their bodies looked ok. not shredded or anything.

What else could it be that I am missing??

Unhappy Re: 2 dead fish :(

Sorry Toolingrl; I would check my water perameters first. When you do a water change you should make up your new salt water 24 hours before so the salt is mixed and heated and dechlorinated before use. Is this new pump for aquarium use because some water pumps can leak oil if not specifically made? Were their any signs off Ich on either the fish that died or the fish that are still alive? How is your heater and temp?

Question Re: 2 dead fish :(

    bill,

    Here are my water pars:
    PH 8.0
    AM 0.1
    NI 0
NA 160? It's always 160 even after water changes. could this really be accurate? its at the top end of my chart.
    KH/ALK 10

The sponges on my rock look really shrunken too. I've kept this tank for over 5 years now and have never seen this before. What do you think?

Cool Re: 2 dead fish :(

Hi Toolingrl; I think you found the problem, 160 is definitly a wrong reading. Is their a Local Fish Store near you to check a water samlie and pick up a new test kit. Good Luck!!

Cool Re: 2 dead fish :(

I was wondering if you knew what your water department uses in the water as far as chlorine or flouride or chloramines. It would be good to find out since you do not have a RODI Unit.

    Re: 2 dead fish :(

just a few thoughts is your heater working? ive had mine crack druing a water change before and that shocked me and my tank for a few days before i figured it out ( only 1 of my fish died because of that) other then that get your tap water checked asap also

another thought though probarly not very likely is the pipes themselves may be damaged/ corroded

also a mistake i used to see alot when working in a pet store 04-05 is a chemical was used to clean the faucet or sink or bucket / jug thats used to cary water to the tank .( one guy used a old pine sol bottle to bring in water to get tested .....)

chromis can have a disease i think called red scale and this can quickly spread to other fish and the sailfin tang is a realtivly frail fish as far as water parameters go if i recall

if you have a deep sand bed you could have released a high percentage of toxic gas from the bactiria.

you could of added really cold water stressing out the fish and 2 ware weak already

    these are all just posabilitys
