I have a 6+ year old established 100+ gal reef tank. I successfully kept a pair of Cleaner Shrimp for several years until they both died within about 1 month of each other, this was several years ago. Ever since then, I have had no luck keeping Cleaner Shrimp. They last anywhere from days to months then die. Is there a specific condition that I should be looking for that Cleaner Shrimp are sensitive to?
I have checked and rechecked all my tank levels and everything is where it should be. Based on the health and condition of the rest of my tank this seems to be the case. I current have a Coral Banded Shrimp (1+ years), Peppermint Shrimp and Fire Shrimp that are all doing fine. They all seem to molt regularly. I also have a host of other corals, fish and invertebrates that all seems to be doing fine.
I have tried getting Cleaner Shrimp from multiple different places to rule out any problems with the source, but keep having the same results. I did have someone from the LPS tell me to add supplemental iodine to help with Cleaner Shrimp, but that turned out to be a disaster. High iodine levels caused a serious algae problem. I abandoned that approach and now have the algae problem back under control.
I’m thinking of requesting a detailed water analysis from my local water company to see if there is something that might be causing a problem, but if there was, why would it only affect Cleaner Shrimp?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I regularly measure for:
PH
Salinity
Nitrite
Phosphate
