    Re: power head and circulation

10-20X total sys volume/hr. Tailor it to the corals you intend to keep. Soft corals the least, LPS moderate, and SPS the highest.
Make sure to also factor in the flow from skimmers and any other filters you may have. It all counts.
Not sure if you have the same products we do, but wavemakers like Tunzes are great...SPS really thrive with them, however; they are pricey and take up room in the display. Seaswirls do a good job of creating random flow patterns. Stay away from anything that cycles power on and off to your powerheads. Almost none of them are designed to do this. Vortechs will do it, and they're incredible. You may only need one or two if you go that route, but again...pricey, and a lot of peple complain that they are louder than they would like.
Koralia style powerheads work pretty well on a budget. Maxijets probably give the most bang for your buck, but they are not always fish/invert friendly.
Closed loop is the best as far as getting a clean look and maximum flow at the same time, but this requires drilling your tank in many locations, a large pump(s), and as with all things involving the use of bulkheads, there's always the risk of leaking/flooding.

    Hope this helps.
