    Post Clown fish breeding

I have a pretty decent setup and i have a pair of ocellaris clowns(they like eachother for sure) My stock is a 36 gallon, i have plenty of live rock, a sailfin tang, a dottyback, 3 nassarius snails, 3 scarlet reef tip hermit crabs, and a peppermint shrimp. my setup i have a rena smart filter(two cartrages), a aquaeon 30 gallon filter with bioballs and random media(depends but is useually carbon), a maxi pump(200 i think; its small), a bubbler, and a heater. water conditions are perfect for living but are there any specifics that clowns like to get busy in?

also while i have a post whats your favorite clean up crew? im thinking of getting an urchin or something like that, do those buggers eat much?

Thumbs up Re: Clown fish breeding

    HI
I had a breeding ocellaris pair before..In my opinion, they need a peaceful territory..and a flat surface to lay eggs (apart from the water quality being good enuf) the pair will protect the eggs well, but your crabs and other fish might feed on them.

also, remember they will lay eggs continuously once started....probably 2-3 days after the previous batch eggs hatch...good luck.

I have a pair of black ocellaris now and waiting for them to lay their first batch..

    Cheers / Sashi

    Re: Clown fish breeding

I'm sure someone that's bred before will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in order for the fry to have any chance of survival, you would need to relocate them to some sort of nursery tank without pumps of any sort...big sponge filters in a small tank for aeration/turnover. I think the first trip through an impeller would be lights out.

    Re: Clown fish breeding

    This is what I did.

I turned off all pumps and lights in my tank on the 8day night. kept the room dark and 90 mins later I used a flash light to see if the eggs have hatched. I had a black hang on (shld be black if not the new borns will bang to the sides of this tank and die) tank inside my main display tank and slowly collected the new born with a cup and placed them inside the hang on. the only thing inside the hang on was a air stone connected to a small air pump. very slow aeration is more than enough. The hang on had a small opening in the bottom through which water came in from the main display. this opening was covered with a net through which the fries cannot escape. I had a very small white light for the hang on which was kept on 24x7. light shldn't be too bright. i fed them live rotifer initially and then moved to newly hatched brine shrimp..the first time i was able to save only one fish. the second time, none and the third time again just one survived. every time i collected atleast 80-90 fry. it was quite an experience. the high failure rate was mostly because of lack of food.. rotifer was tough to maintain. I live in Tokyo and getting corolera for rotifer was a major trouble. only one shop sold it and its too far from where I live !! my pair died after an outbreak of what I suspect was Brooklynella Disease. I am now looking forward to my black ocellaris to mate...

    Cheers / Sashi
