skimmer problems

I have a cone skimmer in my sump and when my overflow is off it works great. But when my overflow is on it doesn't work very well. It is in the same compartment as the drain hoses and I was thinking about making another compartment just for my skimmer, but I wanted some other opinions first.

I would make a separate section for it to prevent fluctuations in the water level.

That is what I was thinking as well. Let me ask though my skimmer is plugged into a surge protector that controls the overflow. I shut it off when I feed my fish and coral, do you think that would effect it?

Hello,
The surge protector has no effect on the skimmer production. Shutting off the skimmer during feeding is normal. Feeding will have a dramatic effect on skimmer performance for at least an hour or two.
