What to say to get what you want for your reef...

So I realize many people have difficulties justifying reef related purchases to their significant others. With persuasion being the most common method of getting what you want, I wanted to see if we can compile a list of successful excuses to be used by anyone in need of a little extra help.

    I'll start.

I always try to relate it to money. I was thinking of buying a led light system so I told her think of the energy saving, and I won't have to buy any more 90 dollar bulbs yearly, and don't have to worry about replacing the ballast. Then I told her about the heat issue, and the lighting effects to sugar coat it. So she let me buy it. But then she made me return it because the fans were to loud. LOLWoman

Simple: if I don't buy [enter any item I should have bought from the onset yet procrastinated about] your sons "Nemos" might not survive the week.

Ingredient 1: add two kids, ages 2 and 1 that love the reef
Ingredient 2: location. location. location. tank in oldest sons room
Ingredient 3: wifey killed her goldfish first week we moved in together and is constantly reminded

All adds up to a recipe for WINNING!

Just lie..."It was only $10" when you just spent $80 at the LFS.

Wow Chavez thats a great deal for a led fixture. And I have total faith in SWC. I have a cone skimmer that im getting ride of for a hob skimmer and in all honesty swc is my only choice for a skimmer. But Ill let you take the plug and buy the light first and if your corals grow and its not loud I'll buy one with out thinking twice.

Quid pro quo keeps things fair, and puts my own spending in perspective. You're less likely to drop $500 on a whim when it's gonna cost you another $500 to do so.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

    That actually works well.

I also use "it was on sale" and "I got it on clearance " hard to argue a good sale price.

Re: What to say to get what you want for your reef...

Just yesterday i said he gave me 2 soft corals for the price of 1 cause they were on the same rock so i just couldn't leave it there. You don't get a good deal everyday!! Right??

Flyboy, i have a 160 cone skimmer from SWC and at first i had problems with it overflowing and micro bubbles but some how it just went away. Don't know what happened. Now for the LED's im trying to convince him to let me demo a set of 3 on my 112 gallon if i commit to buy if my tank likes the change. He said he'd think about it! (wish me luck LOL)
