    My first corals-help?

i just bought my first corals over the weekend. can anyone give me some good advise? i have a 45 gallon corner aquarium with 50lbs live rock. my tank is 24 inches deep with a 250 watt metal halide. the first coral is a "pulsing xenia" it was in the tank for about an hour when i seen my red knob starfish on top of it. i pulled him off and fed him. the xenia appears to be ok. it couldnt have started to eat it, it was only on it for a minute or two. i guess i gotta get rid of the starfish. the second coral is just a "polyp frag." i didnt want to start with anything expensive, because its my first corals. i have both about half way down my tank. the polyps seem to open and close as normal. the pulsing xenia havent opened pretty much since we"ve put it in the tank. i have read some forums and everyone seems to say that thay"re hit or miss with the xenia. can someone give me some advise on the depth and location of the corals? and any other help you might have for me. thank you.

u may need to get rid of the starfish has it can eat soft corals but it is up to u if u do or not.

the thing with pulsing xeina is that it doesn't travel well most of time u can try putting it in a area where there is some flow.

it can take a few days for them to settle into a new tank.

i'm trying to find my starfish a good home. as far as the xenia, i've had it for 2 days now and it still hasnt opened since the starfish was on top of it. there is no way the starfish did anything to it. it wasn't even on top of it for 2 minutes. i'm eliminateing that as a reason for it not opening. i am being patient. like you've told me, it can take a couple days for it to get accustom to my tank. the polyp frag that i also bought at the same time seems to be loving it in my tank. this is all new to me and i like it.

    Hello,
There are many species of Xenia and there are different requirements for each. A picture would be helpful. Xenia umbellata which is often called Pom Pom Xenia is picky about alkalinity and prefers a rage of 8-10 dKH. It will slowly melt away at 11+ dKH. Xenia elongata is another common species. It is more of a brown color with long stalks (up to 4") and is probably accepts the widest range of parameters. It is also the fastest growing, doubling in size every 30 days

    Regards,

I can definately vouch for that. Mine grows faster than my hair algae.
