How long do we have to mail in the petition? I am going to print off a couple of copies. My wife and I will sign them, and I will take it to my LFS and leave it there for a few days so all of his customers can sign it. I think we all need to make sure that our local LFS has a copy of the bill and a petition. Many of the LFS owners are not members of this board and may not know a whole lot about the ban and its potential impact on their own business. I am sure we will be able to get many more signatures this way.

One correction- I will not be delivering the petitions to Washington- I'm going to Sacramento.
Here is the latest update on the situation: The bill was voted on by the Assembly on May 7. It passed unanimously, 78 to 0. THIS IS NOT GOOD!!! I spoke with Dave Weaver (Assemblyman Harman's staff aid who is handling this bill) today and he stated that Mr. Harman's office has been receiving phone calls from concerned hobbyists across the nation!! THIS IS GOOD! We need to keep up the pressure. The bill will now go into Senate Committee for discussion. I am going to try to go to Sacramento and testify in front of the Senate Committee on behalf of the industry/hobby. I am only going to go and fight for this if you guys think it's important. You can show me that you think it is important by signing the petition! If I get at least 250 signatures, I will go testify. PLEASE HELP ME HELP THE INDUSTRY/HOBBY! Mr. Weaver said that it will be about a month before the Senate will be ready to vote on it, so I'm setting a deadline of May 31 to receive all of the petitions. If the Senate passes it, we have lost- and no more Caulerpa will be imported. My fax machine has been ringing a lot today with people sending in their petitions!! In fact, I've received more petitions today than I have all week! Momentum is growing! GREAT WORK GUYS!! Continue to keep phoning and writing- we are getting through to them!! As of March 3, 2001 this bill has passed the Assembly Committee by a vote of 10 to 1, and is on its way to the Committee on Appropriations (may have passed through appropriations yesterday, not sure yet.) Once passed there, it goes to the Senate, then to the Governor to sign.
Word has it that they would like this thing wrapped up by early summer. Time is of the essence! Mary Middlebrook requests signatures before the end of May. Your signature on the petition will go to Washington with Mary (www.reefsource.com )when she makes our plea to the Senate. Great idea to print copies for the LFS's! There is a seperate petition for Industry Professionals at the same page link as in my original post. Extra signature pages are available to print out at http://www.reefsource.com/New_Folder/petitionsigs.txt You will want to print the industry/professional petition for the stores. Suggestion to everyone on this board: take the petition to your LFS's. I am doing so this week, and there seems to be a lot of interest. Unfortunately, most of the people that I've talked to aren't following this as closely as us on the bulletin boards, and don't realize the urgency.

I've been receiving a LOT of faxed petitions!!! Keep up the good work guys!!!
Some people have e-mailed and faxed me expressing some confusion. Let me clarify a few things. 1. EVERYONE (whether you live in California or not) should fax or mail in the petition. No petitions are accepted via e-mail. Try to get as many signatures as you can- many people are taking the petition to their LFS and aquarium clubs. EXCELLENT!! 2. The petition was created BY me, and is faxed TO me. You are not faxing the petition directly to Assemblyman Harman's office. I will take all of the petitions to Sacramento when I go to speak before the Senate committee. If you want to write a letter in addition to the petition, that is WONDERFUL!! However, individual letters should be faxed to directly to Assemblyman Harman at 916-319-2167. 3. If you want to make a phone call, the guy to talk to is Dave Weaver, Assemblyman Harman's staff aid. He is the guy who is fielding the information for this bill. If you call someone else, you're probably talking to someone who doesn't have a clue what you're talking about!! Call Dave at 916-319-2067- He's a really nice guy and will listen to your input. KEEP USING UP ALL OF MY FAX PAPER!!!
