    Anemone Help

    Hi all!

I have had an anemone in my tank for close to three years now. About a year ago, it retracted into itself, and as I later found out, split into two anemones. I now have two small "stubs" of anemones which move around my tank, but the tentacles have not come out of either of these little guys for more than a year.

I tried feeding them, but they wont open up to eat.

    Is this normal?

It is if they have not found a spot to settle down in. But for a year?? WOW. How much flow do you have in the tank? Try cutting down on flow on one side, and maybe they will settle in. If they were hungry they would eat, you must have sufficient light or else they would be dead already.

That's an interesting thought... I have two constant fans on my tank, one on each side. I'll try turning one off for a couple of weeks and see what happens. One of the anemones is stuck to my clam shell, which bothers me quite a bit. Let's see if they move or open up.

Not so much as turning off the powerhead, but redirecting it. Try to get a calmer area in the tank and move them yourself. Hopefully they will stay put.

    Hi,

What kind of anemones are these?

That is curious. It's hard to say that anything is "wrong" when you've had them for so long. Spending a year roaming with no tentacle extension and not eating is definitely odd. I would not have expected them to live half that long displaying that kind of behavior, and yet, they still go on.

I know that most of the common tropical varieties of nems rely on both light and food, but they have the ability to "fast" for extended periods as long as lighting requirements are met. I don't believe this can go on indefinately, and a year seems extreme to me.
Equally as strange is how they could go on without tentacle extension for very long as these make up most of the surface area for light gathering.

Weird. Sorry I don't have any theories, other than perhaps it's an uncommon species that doesn't follow the usual rules.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
