    Coraline algae

Tank is on week 3, diatom bloom lasted a few days and now I have coraline algae taking off! So im more than pleased with the progress of my tank. Nitrates are less than 5, ammonia is too low to really read. I hope the cycle completes soon.

3 weeks old and you already have Coralline Aglea?? Hmm. most wait forever for that to start. What color is it? And are you able to just dust it off?

I had coraline at 3 or 4 weeks as well! Nice! Good luck and let the cycle finish! best thing I ever did for my tank was to let the cycle finish...at least I think so haha, not a single fatality, although one 'Unsolved Mystery' was my sea hare disappearance...but hey if there is no body, there is no proof of death, maybe he just ran away.... ....anyways, let it cycle! and you will have a much better tank!

Here is a pic of the rock, Its growing a little spot on the glass. I haven't tried to rub it off, but I think its coraline algae lolCoraline algae-imag0161.jpg
Some of it looks a little more red in the pic...looks more like a purple in the tank. The spot on the glass is a pinkish purple...Im not home or I'd snap a pic of the spot on the glass.

Looks like coraline to me! But if its easy to wipe off and a deep redish/purple, could be cyano so def check it out.

Uh, Not good...I rubbed it off the glass, and it came right off. I have a little spot on the heater, and it seems to be growing on the only piece of live rock that I bought from my LFS, I see a couple spots appearing on base rocks around it. Where do I go from here?

Its not rubbing off the rock, just the glass and the heater.

I just read some articles of cyano, I think my lights are on for too long..and I dont have enough flow in my tank. I will cut back the lighting hours and get some more circulation in the tank and see where it goes. My flow is really lacking at the moment..And it seems to be on the spots where water flow is low, (Bottom of glass)

Unless your running your lights for longer than 10 hours a day, your main lights, I wouldn't go that route.

    Re: Coraline algae

Ooooh Cyano. How it ruined my life for a while. I mean, I cut back on lights, I cut down on heat, I added more flow, nothing helped. The only thing I went chemical with was cyano, but mine was bad, like it was taking over my tank, so I went the chemiclean route and have not had an issue since. So worth it, but only if its really really bad like mine was. So just keep an eye on it, cyano is def something that can get out of hand quickly, def try the lights for less and add flow, if that doesnt help be ready to get some chemiclean!!

    Re: Coraline algae

Cyano is a problem in virtually every new tank. I had it as well and can be attributed to numerous things - overfeeding, poor flow, too much lighting and everything else probably posted here. Remember - YOU feed it phosphates and nitrates in order for it to live. If you stay on top of it by siphoning it off the sand/rock, it will go away over time. This is probably a safer and cheaper route than chemicals. If you are really concerned about it and not into chemicals, look into a fluidized sand bed or similar type of mechanism to push the water over the sand in an isolated way. GFO is also a good alternative toward reducing phosphates and ultimately, the food cyano needs to survive. And of course, make sure you are keeping up with the simplest cyano combatant yet - those water changes.

Agreed, I mean I went weeks before going the chemical. Everything was in line as far as param's went and I really did not want to use chemiclean but i felt trapped so I did it.

That's the crux of my point. Weeks is probably months too short. Having a new tank, the expectation is that algae - red slime included - is part of that natural breaking in process. I would have recommended trying it 9-12 months in, if I would have recommended it at all. But that was after all options were exhausted.

Not second guessing you. Just my opinion for anyone else reading this.

    Re: Coraline algae

I totally agree that it is part of the process and to wait it out, mine was just really bad, even after weekly water changes and syphoning it off the sand bed and all. My tank got to a point where it literally was covering every inch of everything just about, rocks, sand, glass and slowly I could see it starting to get on my corals so I had enough and went biowarefare on it. But I do agree, it is def part of the process of new tanks and to let it ride if you can.

Mines not bad, Just on one rock..I wiped a spot off the glass a couple days ago, and It hasn't grown back on the glass yet. Its slow right now, but who knows for how long. I haven't done a water change yet. When the cycle completes, I will do 10% weekly and we will see where that takes us.

Its just an eye sore in the interim, it will not stay there. Make sure you flow is good and your Phosphate does not get outta hand and you will not see it.

Should use ChemiPure or GFO of some sort, as this will strip out the Phosphates from the water, one of the Algea issues. You can still use it in a new tank, your just trying to keep the water parameters in check, phosphates being one of them.

Just added a Maxijet 1200. Setup for circulation mode at 1300gph. Water is really moving now
