Filters should be cleaned out at the very least once a week. If you don't you run the risk of having high Trates, and filters already have a bad rep for that as it is. I don't run a filter. As for Powerheads, thats a good question, mine dont' get anything on them. What are you getting on them that you need to clean them off?

I have an Akita who sheds enough to put hair on every mans head across the universe. a few of those hairs make it into my tank that end up on my power head. There is no stopping it, it's been like this with everything for 11 years. Plus, some algae sometimes.

    Re: how often

I have never cleaned my powerhead and don't run a filter In fact, I saw zero benefit keeping a Fluval 305 canister filter on my tank...which of course, I raced out to purchase on the advice of a co-worker. It has since been repurposed and lives on my FW tank. There too it serves marginal to little purpose (fully planted tank, nitrates consumption by plants etc etc etc.) It does make for a nice toy though, as my kids think it looks like a droid from Star Wars.

I have started to question the whole mechanical filtration concept - relative to canister filters of course - more and more as I progress through my research, primarily on a FW tank. The notion of trapping particles and debris in a common (unflushed) series of chambers with water "feeding" microorganisms rather than allowing the natural consumption of nutrients by plants in a slow, biologically assimilated process, just might force me to put it on Ebay.

Essentially, when I took it off, nothing happened to my fish or my water quality from a degradation perspective. Blah.
