As issue with container for mixing salt water???

    Howdy All,

I recently set up a system to make water changes much easier: a 15 Gallon blue "Food Grade" container, strapped to an upright dolly, with a pump in the bottom of the container with a 7 foot clear hose attached. I have the power to the pump run through a switch box on the top handle of the dolly. Your get the idea.

This has made things VERY easy for me to make water changes as even when I add the salt I can simply drop the hose output back into the container, flip the switch, and let it mix for several hours.

Now to the question/potential problem: After a couple of days with the output hose left in the container (for mixing or storage) the submerged part of the hose get covered with some type of, well, slime. It's not thick enough to see, but I can't really grab the hose without it slipping out of my hands.

Also, after a few days in this container, the water appears to be slightly discolored - not crystal clear as it is when first mixed.

Any ideas? I do not understand the nature of the slime, or the discoloration. Is there an issue with the blue container?

FYI: I am using a 5-stage RO/DI water filtration system.

i also use a 5 stage ro/di and leave my water in 5 gal buckets and never get a slime. so im going to assume its your container. I would test the water in the container to see if your levels seem any funny to what the salt mix says your levels should be. Or better yet just leave plain ro/di water in there for a day or so and then test if. If you can test it for TDS i would say thats probably your best bet. Im not a pro at this but thats where i would start.

Your good. Its all normal. Dont' leave the hose in the water. This happens to mine also. I also use the food grade barrel. No worries.

    Hello,
Unless you keep your container tightly sealed (airtight) the air is full of dirt and bacteria which will quickly begin to grow in your water and anything under water. If given light it will even grow algae due to the nutrients present.

Well I like the sound of this better than my container having some issue. I usually mix the water and do the change the next day. This last time, I mixed but didn't do the change for a week.
