    ID this clam please!

I was getting some LR rubble at a pet store today, and noticed a piece with a hitchhiker clam on it, so now I have a clam. It is about 3/4" across and 1/2" tall. The part that caught my attention was that the top shell has small bumps, but the bottom has spines about 1/8" tall and 1/10" wide. The rest of the shell is the texture of sandpaper. Any ideas what it is or how to feed it? I'll post some photos if I can get some good ones.

Your going to have to put up some pictures. We would be throwing darts at this point. But by spines I'd say Flame Scallop. Thats my guess. Are the spines in the mouth red?

The spines are near the mouth on the shell. I'd post photos, but I don't know how!

Do you have a picture of it on your computer? If so, click on the attachments file in the respond to thread area. Click Borwse on the upload files, click on my photos then find your picture, click upload, wait for it to upload. then close that window. Click on the attachments little down arrow and your file picture will be there.

I have an ipad, is it still the same? The clam finally opened, so I edited my original post to match the clam better.

    Re: ID this clam please!

    Hello,
Most of the hitchhiker type bivalves are members of the thorny oyster family. Brackish and marine species of bivalves (Bivalvia class which includes clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, and others) number about 8,000 so far (many have not been described) so ID can be very difficult. Mussels are also fairly common. The occasional boring clam is also found but it is fairly smooth and looks pretty much like a common miniature steamer clam. All bivalves are filter feeders typically of microscopic particles and are difficult to feed enough without polluting the tank.

    Regards,

It does look like an oyster. Thanks!
