Pro's and Con's of a Plenum?

Someone was telling me about a plenum(Essentially it's water flowing 'thru' the sand). Does anyone know the pro's and con's of setting up a plenum?

Look into a fluidized sand bed, or better yet a deep sand bed.

Actually I just installed a Deep Sand Bed in my sump. Its 7 in. at its tallest and 4in. at its lowest point.

That'll do ya. But thats different than a Fluidized Sand Bed.
