    Re: what is ammonium

Ammonia is an organic compound made up of nitrogen and oxygen(NO3) that. In your tank is either the waste poduced from a consumed organism, such as food, or a decaying organism such as the dead shrimp currently rotting in my tank. Ammonia is the first step in cycling a fish tank. In a new tank and elevyated level of No3 will be followed by a drop in No3 accompanied by an elevated level of Nitrites. An elevated level of Nitrites will be followed by a drop in Nitrites and a ris in Nitrates. Once you test for 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites with a traceable level of Nitrates, your tank is basically cycled.

Correct. A skimmer is great, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it has a place in the cycle, until it's complete and for a few weeks beyond to establish a CUC. There will be people that disagree.

    Re: what is ammonium

Which kind of SKimmer do you have? Is it adjusted right? New skimmers also have a break in period, in which it burns off the factory film on the plastic. To get this off before running the skimmer, you can clean it or soak it in vineager and water. And, your Local guy is correct, there isn't alot of gunk in the water to take out yet, once the rock is entered into the system, you will get die off, and that should make you a froth.

you'll be safe to put your snails in there, no worries. No fish for 6 months?? Why is that?

    Re: what is ammonium

to be honest there are only a couple on fish i like in prefer shimps and snails and other inverts also corals hard and soft
i think im going to leave the tank alone till next week (unless something goes very wrong when testing )
i wont to see what treads the cycle takes as long as somethink does not go off the clock
