Question Do you still run carbon when you have a sump/refugium/aglaescrubber?

I mean once you have the refugium kicking and you no longer need the skimmer, do you leave the carbon bag? Or do you just put in a little carbon every once in a while? I leave a small bag of carbon in the back of my skilter 24/7 but I'm thinking that when I get to a Refugium/sump..... thats established, the carbon wont be needed. I know some of you already have one up and running, what do you do as far as carbon?

Napolean

I havent used carbon in quite awhile, however My sump/refugium with a skimmer runing 24/7 stabilize my system fairly well. I have heard of ppl using it when their water gets a little yellowish looking color to it then they throw the carbon in there and it clears it up in a week, some ppl just run carbon for a couple days each month or some even more. If you don't have a skimmer, I'd expect the water to slowly turn yellow unless you used carbon. Otherwise, you have no export mechanisms for the organics that build up.

Hi,

I have a sump that could be called a DIY ATS or fuge, but no skimmer. I use carbon for a few days once or twice a month.

Napoleon,

I use carbon for 48 hours approximately every 90 days, but definitely not 24/7.

This is to remove the accumulation of various “yellowing” compounds from the macro algae.

Regards,

Scott

I try to keep carbon on hand for occasional use, like previously posted you may develope a yellowish tint to your water after some time and you can run carbon to clear it up or you can rutinely run carbon for a couple of days every couple of weeks or monthly. I have a bag of carbon in my tank nowthat has been there since saturday, I'll leave it for another day or two. Skip
