Reef and red light?

Will a red light bulb hurt, annoy, or in general bother anything in my reef? I want to add a night bulb and I heard a red pc is the way to go. Does it need to be a pc or is a regular 10- 15 watt red buld enough. Does the red cause any kind of algae?

Hi Rick
I have never heard of anyone using a red light.
But i do use a red lens on a flashlght at night after
the lights go out.
It does not seem to bother anything in the reef tank.
Try it out and let me how it works out for you.

I have heard that our creatures can't see light in the red spectrum and that is why they are not disturbed when we use a flashlight with a red lense to view our tank at night. I don't know about the algae thing. I don't see how a red bulb incandescent or PC could cause any problems. Are you planning on running it all night long, or just when you want to view the tank at night?

I was thinking of running it most of the night. Since I do not stay up all night. I figured since my mh goes out around 10:3o that a red light could come on then, until about 2 or 3 am. I think I will give it a try tonight...!
