Tang Heaven ?
Just received my order from IPSF and was surprised that the Geen TH was just sheets. Does anyone grow this or is this a food source only. How long will it last before it starts to decompose? The gold and red TH and feather caulerpa does look more like a plant and I think I can figure out how to "plant" these. I'm just unsure of the green!
Thanks, Mike |

Tang Heaven green is sea lettuce (Ulva sp.). This algae will attach to hard substrates. I had some small pieces start to grow on a filter over flow. The queen conchs ate it eventually.
Tang heaven red etc will grow just floating. You might want to set up a 10 gallon culture tank for it and use it as food.

i recieved an order of tang heaven about three months ago and attempted to grow it in a little 7 (?)gallon eclipse.the green lasted a couple months but didnt seem to grow.the red is growing, but its not a fast growing algea ,at least not under the lighting i have(stock eclipse).maybe the poor lighting was the reason the green didnt seem to take.

If I put some of the red and gold in a 10 gal culture tank, where would it get nutrients? Is light enough? What would you use for filtration, etc?
BTW, I've tried giving each type to my purple tang in my reef and he does think he's gone to heaven; Loves it! He had been raised on seaweed selects. Mike |

scout,
my little eclipse has about five pounds of liverock and three crabs(unidentified hitchhikers).the crbs get fed a peice of formula one once in a while ,so there is some nutrient input.the tank has only an air stone for circulation, and the light(on 24/7).no heater ,nothing.the amphipod population in that tank is amazing, nice fat ones.when i pull out some red for my mimic tang ,i sweep the tank with a brine net and add some pods too,for my mandarin(even though my tank is covered anyway).the pods definitely like to eat the red(and the green) and there are some kicking on it all the time.oh, and i also had the gold when i started ,but it turned red.i think they are the same thing from different lighting(im not sure though ,just guessing )anyway, for better info you could e-mail gerald at ipsf.he is VERY helpful ime,and will answer any questions you might have. |

Scout,
Get some Iron supplement and feed weekly. I set up a 15 gal to try and grow different types of algae and the caulerpa really didn't do well but a Brillo Pad type algae flourished and I also put a small amount of green TH in and it is now starting to grow on the penguin filter outlet . I also have some TH red starting to grow in my daylight 24/7 refuge on the plastic egg crate that I have in there. I will post a couple pictures. |

ahh, finally people who have ordered the gold!
![]() I have plenty of red and want something different in my refugium, have you all had good succes with the gold? I was thinking of gowing it in my main tank and refugium. I already have 7 algae species in my refugium but too much green! I really like the gold, should I add it to my detrivore kit?thanks Andrew |

Chromis,
If I didn't have the red and gold side by side I wouldn't even know the difference. Appears to be the same species, just a color variation. The tang doesn't seem to care which one it gets. Mike |

if they are different colors then that is what I want. I dont have a tang, I have to much live rock for one. I grow gracilaria for its beauty and for nutrient export. My large patch of red gracilaria is turning orange right now and I am worried, is it dying? Perhaps I should trim back the cauperla near it?
Thanks Andrew |

Chromis,
The picture of the gold that I posted is the length of the TH when I spotted it . I didn't even know it was growing until just a couple days ago when I checked the filter because it was not flowing properly, it was hidden by the light fixture. I had some of the TH in the tank but it disappeared , then I see it growing on the filter. I was supprised !!!! I feed the tank weekly with Iron. The red in my sump I just spotted it the other day also . Me be happy ![]() |

chromis, in order to keep the gold gold and the red red they would have to be under different lighting.it seems to me that under bright light it ALL turns gold ,under dimm light it ALL turns red.imo, ime, imho, fwiw, etcetc

Organic,
That might be true , I don't know , but my gold is under 110 watt(on the surface of the water) and the red is under 55 watt just slightly under the water. hmmm !!!!! http://community.webtv.net/MarkPelskiREEF |

Hmm, that would make sense because only the underside of the gracilaria is still red and the top is now orange.
