Help adding a sump/refuge to my main tank

I wnat to add a sump/refuge to my existing 120 reef tank but not sure how to cycle the refuge. Do I just fill it with RO water and bring the levels up as close to my main tank such as my calcium,salinity,ph and start the return pump after I have added the sand and live rock? Or do I place a power head in the refuge and let the water cycle once added live lock ,sand and levels to match the tank and let the refuge run for a few weeks then start the return pump back to the main tank.

when i added mine i had to remove my bio-balls from my old sump first. when they were all gone i bought cured lr and ls from pa and all at once i remove old sump and added my sump/refugium.
