Killer Snails
Just got my snails today from IPSF. All were doing great until 1 hour ago. I have 3-4 fairly large snails that look somewhat like very large nassarius. They have a light tan with black speckled "trunk" and "foot". The shell is dark with light streaks in it. I found 2 of them eating my new baby strombus. Both shells now appear empty. The killers have now been moved to my FO. Do these sound like anything you've heard of? Does anyone know of any links with pics of harmful snails?
Thanks! Mike |

I had 2 hitchhiker snails that did the same thing. They had long snouts that they used to get into other snails shells. They went through about 5 snails before I caught them in the act...I have a grave of empty shells.
The snails looked a little like little conch snails. I flushed them, I was pissed...

Same exact experince as you both. Welk style snail killing cerith snails. THe fact of the matter is besides queen conchs and nassarius snails almost all welks are preditory.

Did these come in with your order, or did you already have them in the tank?

icemark,
No these were hitchhickers in my tank. They had been there about 1 year. I never noticed them attacking snails before, of course that doesn't mean they didn't. I guess the safest thing to do is to remove all snails that I didn't buy and place them in my FO. Thanks Mike |
