My tank has developed a bad case of red slime. This weekend I am planning on doing a major water change and cleaning it off most everything in the tank.. One question I have.. It is on the DSB also... Should I stur the DSB or leave it?

I would not disturb the dsb. I had cyano in my 10 gallon clownfish tank and the ONLY thing that WORKED was adding cauperla. I tried conchs, mediacations, water changes- everything. About 2-3 weeks after adding cauperla my cyano is dying. It is my best experience in this hobby. After adding the cauperla I noticed that the cyano wasnt so plump and bright, now there is only a small receding patch.

It is normal for a system to go through a red cyano bloom. I had a bad case in my trigger tank a few months ago that was intractable, and because of the fish, scavengers and caulerpa would be eaten up. So I added eurythromycin, and it was gone within 24 hours and never came back. I since used it in a 10 gallon nano reef with similarly positive results, and no harm to fish, corals, inverts or the biological filter.
It is probably best not to use the drug unless you need to, but if it is between ripping your system apart and dropping in the contents of a couple of capsules, don't be too afraid. Just make sure it is eurythromycin, which you can obain at a LFS for a few bucks. |
