Help Cucumber & Green Star Polyps

I did exactly the opposite of what I usually do. I went to the LFS and made an impulse purchase without knowing a thing about the critters I was buying. I walked out with a rock of Green Star Polyps and a mystery Cucumber.

Problem 1: I have read about this in other posts but thought I could use some personally tailored information. The GSP opened minutes after I put them in. They opened completely for the next 3 days. Now they have not opened for 2 days going on 3? They are about 8" from the surface. There have 2 VHO bulbs above (one 10,000k day bulb & one 12,000k 50/50). They have moderate current. The LFS likley had more powerful lighting than me.

Problem 2: I have no idea what type of cucumber I bought. The LFS told me it is a scavenger/sand stirrer. Since I brought it home it is primarily nocturnal, and has remained at the surface water line. It has hundreds of legs like a star fish, it has branches that look like soft corals on its mouth that it uses to grab food. The body is about 5" long and is dark brown/black with brown/white thorn like spikes. I have feed it a few pieces of freeze-dried plankton and it consumes it rapidly. Any info would be great.

Thanks

check the star polyps and make sure that there is no red alge or anything growin on them, if a mat of that stuff forms on them they wont open up, but mine also sometimes go a few days with out opening up, but they usually come back.

As for number two, it sounds more like a sea apple than a sea cukumber. I didnt think cukes had the feeding branches that they shoved into their mouths.

You dont think it has anything to do with the lighting? Do you feed GSP at all?
