Finally!!!! I've taken FOCUSED SHOTS!!! Is my open brain dying?

I've finally taken a regular 3x magnifying glass and put it over the lens on my Kodak DC3200 dig. cam. Took a little practice, but results seem good. Are my corals healthy or no?

whats the lighting? It maybe under to much light? Maybe to close to another corals or may just need some food. hard to say. This is if all the water para. are good. Could be many things.

Well, right now, only 2X55 PC's 03 blue and 10k white. I don't have MH and VHO's up yet on my 80, so im just using the PC's at the moment. It came out of the 25 gallon which was lighted with teh same PC's. Why are there brown stripes on it? I don't know if it's dying or not.

how long has it been in your tank. i have one that after 2 months is starting to acclimate to my tank. they dont like to be moved much and prefer substrate. typicaly when they are dying they start to show there skeleton

Actually I would be more concerned that the white/clear areas could be bleached (loss of zooanthellae).

You might try feeding it. If using frozen foods, squirt a little of the water you thaw the food in around the coral. In a minute or two, they will often extend feeding tentacles and you can then give it a chunk of meaty food.

IME, they are flexible on lighting. My open brain was originally in a 10G with 56W PC eight inches over it. Its now on the floor of my 135W under 400W Iwasakis.

As said above, it may just need to acclimate if its new.

Yep - the coral may have been bleached and is now recovering. If that's the case, it'll turn more and more brown. I had a torch coral that did this - you can see a pick of it when it was bleached on my website. It was white when I bought it but is now solid brown.

Oh yeah - you might try feeding the gonipora DT's phyto and the smallest/smaller sizes of golden pearls(don't overfeed the latter - VERY potent food. No more than a pinch a day). You can get golden pearls from www.brineshrimpdirect.com and DT's from www.premiumaquatics.com .

Feed it!

I have brought a number of brains and buttons, including ones that were badly bleached, back from the “edge” simply by feeding it.

Also, create a depression in the sand so that the brain in set into it. In it’s natural environment, the base is almost completely buried.

Thanks for the replies. I took a shot this morning as I turned on my actinics and it has all its tentacles showing. Do I feed it when it has tentacles all out, or when none is out? What should i feed this guy? I tried brine shrimp cube, but it just floats away. I don't want to lose the green open brain.

Feed it pieces of shrimp, squid, silversides etc.

My Wellsophyllia eats a medium sized tiger shrimp per week.

Rule of thumb for a LPS coral, if it has a mouth, feed it. This is even more imperative for a bleached specimen, which has no zooanthellae to manuf. it’s own food.
