Question DSB question

I am thinkin about adding it to my established tank but every tim i go to my lsf i get talked out of it. they tell me that (not sure the name of it)if the sand bed is desterbed it ca reeles toxic gass into the tank and kill everything is this just a bunch of BS

Neal, what they are trying to tell you is that a deep sand bed will produce hydrogen sulfide which will wipe out your tank. They probably sell a lot of nice trickle filters and canister filters that would solve all your filtration problems and spare you the dreaded hydrogen sulfide catastrophe. Well, it ain't gonna happen! Any sulfide that tried to make it up through your deep sand bed would be oxidized to sulfate on contact with oxygen in the upper layer of the sand bed.

Remember that to maintain the health of a deep sand bed, it must be populated by a diverse population of appropriate meio- and infaunal life. Lots of microbes, worms and other good stuff like that. It won't help to discuss any of this with the LFS employees because they're only telling you what they have been told to say.
