I've been told that you can have too much filteration--too much live rock and sand, wet/dry with live rock, huge powerfilter with live rock, etc. Is this possible? The theory is that the bacteria will convert Nitrite into Nitrate so fast that you'll have to do more frequent water changes. Does that mean you never have a stable, balanced system? Should you constantly adjust the quantity of live rock, bio-balls, etc. to the bio load of the tank?

You can have too much protein skimming, but in terms of too much LR, with the advent of DSB's, you can use as much or as little as you want. The bacteria in the LR will adjust it's populations to the amount of fod available for it, more fish and critters=more bacteria, less = less. it's wet/dry filters that unnaturally keep bacteria pop's high.
SO, to answer your question more succinctly: YES, you can have too much filtration W/ wet/dry's, powerfilters, etc. But, if you go allnatural (only LR and DSB) then NO. HTH... ![]() |
