    Adding/moving LR to established tank

    Hi Everyone,
I have about 2-3LBS of LR that has been sittig in my 10G tank w/o lighting for about 5 months now. I was waiting on using this to set up a refugium. But as of now I will not be able to.
So I was wondering if I would have any problems moving this rock over to my 29G that has been set up for almost a year now? Will the rock start a cycle?
The tank that the rock is in only has a small power filter and heater and that was all.
There is also a 2" layer of LS (not sure how "live" it is now, but could I move some of it over to the 29G w/o any problems also??

    Thanks,
    CAptK

If the tank the LR has been in has been running well with some airation; and the same overall properties as your main tank you shouldn't have much of a cycle at all.

I would pull the rock and smell how fishy it is. If it is still pretty stinky, stuff may still be dying in it. But if it doesn't smell too bad, it is probably okay to stick in the tank. Shake it / blow it off with a powerhead and it should be good to go.

I just added 20 lbs of mostly-cured LR into my 29 gallon .. I should have let it sit for a bit longer, but it had only been cycled out of the ocean for 3 weeks and it didn't create an ammonia spike at all.. It did have a bit of debris on it though, and I should have rinsed it better. 3 lbs shouldn't give you any kind of problem.

    Hi CaptainK!

I agree. Even if the rock isn't cured, as long as the rock in the 29 is cured and the tank is cycled, it should be able to handle a 3lb uncured LR load.

As for the LS, make sure you add small amounts. You don't want to disturb your existing sand bed by adding a lot at one time.

    Best of luck,
    Scott
