Question to dsb or not to dsb.

I have finally received my new acrylic 70 gal pentagon tank and have one last decision to make - do I go with DSB or not. My local store owner says that my current flat worm infestation can be caused by sand bed? and I'm also worried about acrylic and scratching with the sand. I have a 2 inch ESV oolitic sand bed going now on my 55 and would hate to see that sand go to waste.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi wbalke, welcome to Reefland!

Personally, I am in favor of a DSB in any reef tank.

Yeah - all logic would point to the DSB , but these flat worms are really ugly and I thought if there was any truth to sand/worm connection maybe I could start new tank without the planaria. I have researched the boards and have found good info on on the falt worms.

The best way to eliminate flatworms is to never put any corals in your tank because they usually come in as hitchhikers on coral.

id stay with the 2 inch oolite bed... it will look better. ive found that two inches is fine for most reef tanks.

Welcome to Reefland!

Another vote for a DSB. Actually I use 2, both 5" deep.

My vote is in for Deep Sand Bed. I have my 25 gallon at 4" and my new 80 gallon at 4 1/2 ". Lots of life on the 25 gallon, but also has flatworms. I use mostly silica sand mixed with carib sea, so my results may be different than others, but silica sand CAN be used. Must have come from coral because I did not see any beforehand. Not a problem though, I think you would just need to get somethign to eat it.

Regards,
Ilham

wbalke ~

You have probably already read this recent thread on this topic: http://www.reefland.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/008741.html

But in case you didn't notice, in my replies in that thread, I did post links to two very informative articles by Dr. Ron Shimek, whose speciality is sediment ecology.

One more vote for the DSB. I want through a lot of trouble to put one in my established 55.
