Clownfish - host coral?
I read that if a clownfish takes up residence in certain corals that they will inevitably die. which corals will this not happen to?? are leathers ok?

Hi fishkid,
My clowns originally took up residence in a large soft coral before moving onto my elegance where they still remain with no ill affects, the soft coral however never seems to open as much as it did when the clowns used it as their host. I would have thought that they would abandon any coral should it show any signs of deteriation as it would offer no means of protection. |

Mine used a large hammer and it eventually died from them. I think it could have been prevented, I had an aggressive blue damsel and everytime the clowns ventured onto his side of the tank he would chase em. The clowns would then dash into the hammer. To me it looked as if the clowns constantly dashing in and out tore the polyps and caused infection. I think if the damsel wouldnt have threatened them, it would have been fine.

My clown has lived in Xenia Elongatas for over a year. They don't even close up anymore because they're used to the clown's presence.

One of our clowns has been hosting in our frogspawn for over a year. For the first couple of days the clowns did aggrivate the coral, however once the acclimation was over all animals appear to be none the worse for the wear. The frogspawn has since more than doubled in size. In order for the coral to be a good host it needs to be healthy enough to survive the trashing of the clown during acclimation. After that the clowns appear to be far gentler and less of an irritant to the coral.
I definitely don't agree with the innevitable demise once hosting has begun. Another factor that plays very heavily in this is the size relation of clown to coral. Just as in clown/anemone relationships big clown and small coral will end in poor results. Small clown in large colony usually works quite nicely . |

My clown has been living in a Green Open Brain since February, and the GOB has never looked bigger or better.

Along the lines of silly clowns, mine adopted a shaving brush plant. He kept trying to feed it!
