California Southdown?
It kills me to read all you folks out there talking about this dirt cheap Southdown aragonite sand from Home Depot. My Home Depot has never heard of the stuff. What gives? Any Californians out there know where to get this stuff?? Inquiring minds want to know!

Unfortunately, it isn't carried by any of the Home Depots in California. In fact, it is only carried by a few Home Depots on the east coast that are relatively close to the distribution point in Pennsylvania. Several retailers (including Premium Aquatics and Reefland) now offer Southdown sand for sale at a reasonable price but the shipping charges are more than the cost of the sand. You can also order ESV oolitic sand directly from the source in Brooklyn, NY for about $21/50-lb bucket plus shipping, but the shipping to the west coast would be a lot. One hobbyist in your neck of the woods did actually have a few pallets of Southdown sand shipped to southern California last year (Joyce in Quartz Hill) as a cooperative venture for the benefit of the many hobbyists there. As far as I know, she may still have some available. Her board name, on this and several other boards, is Macimage. She has been selling it at cost, which works out to about $18/50-lb bag--it's very expensive to have the stuff trucked across the country. There have been rare instances of folks who have succeeded in getting their local Home Depot to store-transfer Southdown sand into their local area but these success stories are extremely rare. In almost all cases, Home Depot will refuse to do it. I have never heard of a Home Depot in California willing to do this. Ninong ![]()

I know a guy who knows a guy who has a barber who knows a guy who got two bags last week
Actually I do know a guy who works a HD who got two pallets shipped out a few months ago. I got his last two bags. He told me that he was expecting 4 more pallets but I think that fell through. I'll see if I can find his e-mail.I also was lucky enough to get 8 bags from Joyce but I'm pretty sure that's all dried up..no pun intended. Mark |

Update:
It could happen next week, if it does you'll probably know about it.

I know Premium Aquatics isn't selling it anymore, and I checked with scott here @ reefland and as of last week he has none ethier
I seen a few people over at reef central board talking about http://www.purearagonite.com and going that route . I seen a few people in the same area's grouping together and ordering a pallet or whatever and splitting the cost because they have co-op buying . HTH |
