Euphyllia vs xenia

I have been discussing this in the thread pumping xenia almost dead. And hope more will find this here. YOu can check out the details of my theory in that thread, but i would like to know if anyone has had problems keeping xenia in the same system with any euphyllia coral that is bright green in color. Specifics on observed growth if true. For those of you that might have success mixing the two croals i would like to know if the euphyllia is upstream or downstream from your xenia. Meaning if the current washes over the euphyllia and then is directed towards any means of filtration skimmer/sump/macroalgae refugium.

I haven't been able to keep xenia alive either, and I have two flourescent green frogspawns in my tank. Whether or not they were "upstream" is anyone's guess, as there is a lot of current. However, I've tried it twice with the same result each time. HTH

Interesting...

We have a massive Hammer of the pink / neon green variety. And last week, we swapped frags for a nice little xenia. The xenia is on one end, and the hammer is in the middle of the tank. There is "fresh" current washing over the xenia, but as we all know, circulation is crucial, so there's a lot anyway.

In any case, the xenia isn't "thriving." It may still be adjusting, but only pulses on and off. My husband loves this coral, and I sure hope we don't lose it. That's my experience of all of one week. But it's an interesting theory...

Srgtkoons,

I kept Green Torch (Euphyllia glabrescens) directly below a large colony of Umbrella Xenia (Xenia umbellata).

The proximity of these two colonies can be seen on the home page of my WEB site.

The xenia grew so fast that it had to be severely trimmed on two occasions.

The only interaction that I had to deal with was the xenia colony growing to a size that shaded the Euphyllia, to the point that is was not getting as much light as I would have liked.

My systems filtration consisted of the EcoSystem/Deep Sand Bed hybrid, also shown on my website.

I did notice that the Euphyllia grew rather more slowly than I am accustomed to, but Euphyllia often requires an extended “settling period” before if begins to grow at a high rate.

Regards,

Scott Passe

damn spasse,i was hoping to blame my lack of success on my torch.i know that all euphyllia are considered powerful stingers so i thought mabe the srg. was on to something.xenia is not known to ship/transport well either maybe we all screwed up before they were even in our tanks who knows.

Send a message via ICQ to ScottC
My xenia elongata flows in the current intermingling with the lobes of my frogspawn AND hammer AND open brain AND bullseye/candycane.

Cripes, if I gave it the chance it would grow on them too!!

Weeds I tell you!! WEEDS!!!

Organicreefer,

Peoples experience seems to be at the two extremes.

Many people have trouble growing it.

For others, like ScottC and myself, it is a weed that is almost as prolific and almost as much of a potential pest as a dandelion is to a gardener.

Regards,

Scott Passe

Thanks for the info spasse, mine was growing like a weed up until the point of adding the green frogspawn. I think i might do a little bit of testing on my theory in a more controlled way. Once I get my new tank set up and established, 120 gal, I will take a frag from the original colony and put it back in the 30 gal. I will wait and see what happens. If the xenia crashes, i will then wait a week and remove the frogspawn to my 120 gal and wait another week for any traces of whatever is causing the problem. Then introduce another frag and see what we end up with. Ill be sure to post any results.

Count me as one with large green torch coral and xenia growing all over tank. Have to thin it out monthly. My lfs has trouble with it, guy says xenia requires very high alkalinity, maybe you could look into that?

I have a bright green torch coral that is upstream from my xenia. Everything seems to be doing fine. I'll admit the torch has a potent sting and I have had to give it lots of room.

I have a neon green E. divisa and a green E. paradivisa in my tank, and the Xenia is growing like an ou-of-control weed. I even found it attached to a few of the branches of my paradivisa.
