When Should I perform my first water change? My tank has been stable for about a month. I have a clean up crew, and two fish. So far my Nitrates are zero, but I am getting a lot of algae growth. Also, there seems to be a little bit of detritus buildup . I have live sand, and have been told not to vacuum it. How should I clean up this detritus, and again, when is a good time to perform a water change?

Hi Johliatay,
Welcome to the board. I would not worry too much about the detrius. Your "clean-up crew" should take care of that stuff for ya. Also any worms or pods that are in the sand should take care of it also. As far as when to do a water change, I think that everyone on this board has a different scheduale as too when they do theirs. But a water change should be done regularly! I have a 29G and I do a 10% water change every 2 weeks. I am not sure of the size of your tank but to me a month without a water change is long enough for me. HTH, CaptK |

I back CaptainK all they way. (I'm a $@#*%&# poet and didn't know it) Like he said that different people have different water change schedules. Mine is every 4 weeks.
