Long tentacle anemone?
Can I put a long tentacle anemone in LR or does it have to go in the sand?

Mine spent about 6 months in the sand, and then all of a sudden it made a new home on the the rock all the way on top of the reef right under a 250 MH. You really cant put an anemone anywhere, theya re going to go where they please. You can put it in the sand and bury it and try to anchor the foot with rubble, and you might get lucky, but it might wander off to a spot it finds comfortable. HTH

So, do they like light, water circ., or food? What keeps them stable?

My long tentacle has two spots in the tank, one spot is on a rock about 6" below the 250 MH. It will stay in this spot for about 4 days and then vanish into the rock work for 1-2 days to "chill out". I feed it a gulf shrimp twice a week and it has been doing fine for almost a year. Circulation is a must, but the anemone will ultimately decide what part of the tank it gets the right amount of light and current. What keeps them stable is proper illumination, near perfect water quality, if not perfect meaning no nitrates, proper current, and frequent feedings. Anemones are not the easiets animal to keep and even if you have very thing in check they may not make it. Do a lot of research and look into captive grown anemones. HTH

My LTA buries its column in the sand. It has never gone up on the rocks in the 2 years that I have had it. According to all the popular reef books, they bury in the sand. Of course some LTAs probably haven't read the books. My LTA hosts a large pair of very aggressive tomato clowns. They try to dig out all the sand from around the base of the anemone & this makes the anemone try to move. Therefore, I put rocks around the base to keep the tomatoes from digging it up. My LTA has grown a lot & seems to be thriving. It is under 4 40 watt n.o. flourescents in a 75 & gets a fair amount of of current (enough to make its tentacles sway nicely). I feed it a chunk of some sort of seafood about the size of a marble 2-3 times a week, plus it catches a lot of food from feeding the fish.

I put the LTA about 8" from the top of the tank, on LR, with 4 - 96w PC's in my 110 gal. tank. I hope it does get the idea to wonder too much and sting things as it travels about.
I tried to feed it a silverside, no luck - then I gave it a thawed squad cube and it took it. What do you guys feed yours? |
