what's my anemone doing
I bought a giant blue carpet anemone on Friday. I put a pair of Clarkii's in it and have fed it yesterday some silversides. It is very happy. Mouth is closed and tentacles look great. My water parameters are in line. My slight concern has to do with it's trunk. 70% of the trunk looks bloated, like it's holding water and is not attached to the live rock. the other 30% is attached to live rock. Also the "carpet" area is not wide open, but not closed as if it were feeding. Any ideas?

I just got back from running errands (3hrs). The carpet looks normal. It's "carpet" is expanded. The trunk is not bloated, but also not completely connected to LR.

Medman,
I have a green carpet anemone in my tank. The size seem to vary quite a lot. It changes from 12 inches to 6 inches in a mater of hours and then back to 12 inches again. Also mine is not attached to the live rocks but burried in the substrate. It moved around a lot in the first four months but has remained in one place for two months now. Karun |

Medman,
Just to second what Karun said...most carpet anemones prefer to bury thier foot in sand against a rock or the bottom of the tank. (mine prefers the tank bottom). Bubble tips on the other hand generally prefer to attach to exposed rock. The carpets will also puff up and shrink down a bit just in the course of the day...mine goes from softball size to softball mitt size during the day as it takes in and expels water and expands as the lighting comes on. One other possibility is that the anemone is getting ready to move. Whe I first put my carpet in my tank it would adjust it's size and buyoancy so that it could move around the tank by floating (kind of like a tumbleweed). Once it found it's preferred spot it has remained in nearly the same location for the past year. HTH, Greg |
