Unhappy Mithrax crab shedding problems

Weird and sad occurrence today. I woke up this morning and found my cleaner shrimp feasting on the body of my emerald crab. It looks like the crab was attempting to shed when something went wrong. When I pulled it out of the tank, it's body was soft to the touch and covered in what looked like green algae. My question is, did the shed go wrong? Or could something lhave cracked the shell? I've heard stories of mantis shrimps smacking open crabs, but that'd have to be a rather large mantis ! Any thoughts? Thanks.
